Homework LA 3-4

Week of Feb 13-17:

  • Finish Wall-E online essay if you didn't complete it in class. You can get to it through the Links page on this site.
  • Helen Keller paragraph elaboration. You will need a copy of the reading, but there is a document on the Documents tab (Practicing Elaboration) that will explain the assignment.
  • Rosetta Stone reading/worksheet. Pick up from me in class.

Week of Feb 27-March 3

  • The Giver worksheet (see me for a copy).
  • Under the Blood Red Sun worksheet (see me for a copy)
  • Under the Blood Red Sun  text based evidence writing: What is the definition of power as explained in this passage? Use text-based evidence (2-3 examples) to support your answer.

Week of March 6-10:

  • Write a persuasive essay on the topic of choice. Pick a side:
    –Freedom of choice is powerful and that is a good thing and should be allowed.
    –Freedom of choice is powerful and that is a dangerous thing and shouldn’t be allowed.
    •Refer to the rubric handout for criteria.
    •Use the excerpts from Under the Blood Red Sun and The Giver as evidence/support.
    You may use other evidence, as well.

Week of March 13-17

  • Write a letter to your legislator about HB1046, which would change the current law so that passing state tests would not be required for graduation.
  • Final Draft of the Choice Essay.

Week of March 20-24

  • Read, annotate, and summarize the article "A Longer School Year." A slide show with the steps for writing a summary can be found under the "Links" tab and a copy of the article can be found under the "Documents" tab (CNN A longer School Year). You can search more easily by filtering for LA 3-4.

Week of March 27-31

  • The midterm is to write a proposal to solve the problem of the achievement gap (or another problem as approved by the instructor). Class time will be used to research and write. We will go over the steps to writing a proposal (a PowerPoint slide show and graphic organizer can be found on this site under the "Documents" tab).
  • The final proposal is due to Turnitin.com on April 7.

Week of April 24-28

  • Research a topic from the Elizabethan Era/English Renaissance (about 1550-1650 CE) and prepare to write a short expository essay and share the information with the class. See teacher for the requirements and a graphic organizer. The requirements for the project can also be found on the document tab.
