Speaking and listening are natural and necessary for survival. Reading, writing, and processing information about complex systems (like society) are not natural; they need to be practiced with informed feedback. We need to relate to one another in a complex world in order to survive, so we must develop our natural ability to communicate by refining those skills. Developing literacy skills allows people to wield power and influence in our roles as citizens, consumers, voters, workers, partners, householders, artists, and learners.
