This is an exploratory STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) class focused on Robotics.  It is part of the Career and Technical Education program (CTE) of the Renton School District.

 

I am extremely excited about STEM and the power of Computer Science.  In this class we will be working with Arduino Nano’s to create autonomous robots that achieve a desired outcome.  While Robotics will be the tasks we focus on, the standards to assess the class were taken from the ISTE Standards (International Society for Technology in Education) and reflect additional learning requirements as well(See reverse side).  

 

The goal is to help establish learners who are comfortable with technology, and can accomplish assigned and self-directed tasks on their own and in group settings.           

As mentioned above this semester we will explore Robotics using an Arduino microcontroller.

 

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino-boards are able to read inputs- ex: light on a sensor, a finger on a button, color, etc.…- and turn it into an output – ex: activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online.   The Arduino consists of both a physical programmable circuit board and a IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that runs on your computer, used to write and upload computer code to the physical board.

 Students will complete 3 modules:

  1. Intro to Robotics
  2. Physical Computing (Both Programming and Building)
  3. Final project:  user centered summative project
